The God who leads us into temptation

You’ve been praying the Lord’s Prayer all wrong—at least according to the Pope.

This week some media outlets were astir with the news that Pope Francis wants to change the Lord’s Prayer.

To be completely fair, Pope Francis didn’t actually say the Lord’s Prayer is wrong; rather, he said the way it is most popularly recited is a “bad translation.”  He is hardly the first to suggest that the phrase “lead us not into temptation” ought to be translated “let us not fall into temptation” or something similar. « Read the rest of this entry »

Ah, the refreshment of Spurgeon!

In studying for this week’s sermon on John 1:15-18 I discovered this sermon by C.H. Spurgeon.  Entitled, “The True Tabernacle, and Its Glory of Grace and Peace,” it was preached on the Lord’s Day morning of September 27th, 1885 at the Metropolitan Tabernacle in London, England.  What refreshment the Prince of Preachers still offers!

God-Dependent Spiritual Maturity

We often struggle with growth in grace because we transfer what we understand about physical and social maturity to what we think is true about spiritual maturity.  By physical and social maturity I mean, quite literally, growing up and becoming responsible, productive adults.  In these two areas the goal is, ultimately, to “stand on our own two feet,” so to speak, to depend less and less on others and do more ourselves. It is one of the primary goals of parents to raise children who are not dependent but independent and mature young adults who tackle more and more things that give them a sense of confidence, ability and responsibility. « Read the rest of this entry »
